I hate cigarettes so won't smoke, don't have access to other drugs and don't get high on caffeine in any way beyond twitching if stressed and overloaded with it (overloaded = more than one can of coke or a coke and a coffee). The only "addiction" I have is sugar and it's nothing like that "addiction is" list.

I used to smoke so much pot that people that followed the Grateful Dead told me that I smoked too much. I was rearranging my life to smoke more pot. I quit. I've had three puffs in fifteen years now. Alchohol and cigarettes have never been a problem. Booze puts me to sleep; end of problem. I took one puff of tobacco at 12 and decided it tasted bad; I've never been back. Finally, caffeine calms me down and moderates my ADD. Considering that I'm on a regular schedule with prescription dexedrine, something like caffeine is nothing.

A few bits, mainly in the text at the bottom.

I only really ever had one drug-of-choice (alcohol) mainly because it *works* on me (unlike caffeine, nicotine or dope).

Giving stuff up was never an accident - always a deliberate decision.

Mind you - does sleep count? I am pretty bad for sleeping in preference to nearly anything - but it's not like I really get much choice. I wonder if you can have degrees of narcolepsy (from what I know about sleep/wake mechanisims, it doesn't seem at all unlikely).

Actually, my answer is wrong. Bits of it do, but enough of it doesn't that I don't think I'm as bad as he got. But it's not over the top in that he was fucked and was right to stop.

I think it's a stellar article. I'm curious how the author has continued....
