Having discovered that Microsoft produce a version of C# that can be downloaded for free (express edition), it is currently installing so I can play with it over the weekend.
Bruce Eckel (of Thinking in... series) wrote a C# book that was using all the free .NET utilities. No VS.NET needed. I downloaded a rough draft, and then they pulled the book. Let me know if you want a copy.
