Scientists think that the real world approximates equations.
Mathematicians are unable to make the connection."

Buffy: Nothing is simple any more. I'm constantly trying to figure it out -- who to love, who to hate, who to trust....
Giles: I believe it's called "growing up."
Buffy: I'd like to stop then, okay?
Giles [smiles]: Know what you mean.
[The vampire Buffy's been waiting for rises from its grave; she stakes it almost nonchalantly]
Buffy: Does it ever get easy?
Giles: You mean, life?
Buffy: Yeah. Does it get easy?
Giles: What do you want me to say?
Buffy: Lie to me.
Giles [as they begin walking out of the graveyard together]: Yes, it's terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.
[fade to black; credits begin to roll]
Buffy [voice over]: Liar.

Date: 2005-02-01 08:58 pm (UTC)Illyria: We cling to what is gone. Is there anything in this life but grief?
Wesley: There's love. There's hope...for some. There's hope that you'll find something worthy...that your life will lead you to some joy... and that after everything...you can still be surprised.
Illyria: Is that enough? Is that enough to live on?
Wesley: (Doesn't Answer)

Date: 2005-02-01 11:07 pm (UTC)Spike: Death is on your heels, baby. And sooner or later, it's gonna catch you. And part of you wants it. Not only to stop the fear and uncertainty, but because you're just a little bit in love with it.
Death is your art. You make it with your hands day after day. That final gasp, that look of peace. And part of you is desperate to know: What's it like? Where does it lead you? And now you see, that's the secret. Not the punch you didn't throw or the kicks you didn't land. She really wanted it. Every Slayer has a death wish. Even you.
Sooner or later, you're gonna want it. And the second — the second — that happens, you know I'll be there. I'll slip in, have myself a real good day. Here endeth the lesson.
...
Come on. I can feel it, Slayer. You know you wanna dance.
Buffy: Say it's true. Say I do want to. It wouldn't be you, Spike. It would never be you. You're beneath me.

"... Yeah, but they're, like, fruity jazz bands, man."

"You know why I hate you, slayer?"
"Because I'm a stuck-up little tight-ass with no sense of humour who doesn't know how to enjoy herself?"
"... Er... Well, er, yeah... That's /some/ of it..."

[Buffy and Xander climb over wire fence]
Xander: Be careful!
[Buffy drops lightly to the ground, landing on her feet.]
[Xander plummets face-first onto the concrete and lies there moaning softly.]
