I think this is going to be one of the major differences between Doom3 and HL2. Sure Doom3 is very visually appealing and but the essence of the game is claustrophobia</> and horror. All the rendering being done is generally in a very small space.
HL2 is going to present us with huge open environments that are truer to real life environments as we know them. I think this is going to present a huge difference in gameplay - Doom3 presents us with pure fantasy but Half-life 2 is going to show a game which is set in a believable environment which can make things scarey in a whole different way.
I'd have to see how that thing moves, assuming it isn't just a background plate. I mean, how many polygons is that?
Actually, being a cynic and all, it is my duty to suspect that this really is just a background plate, a shot of a real scene (undoubtedly used for reference) slipped in amongst the rendered images (which seem to be of a distinctly different, lesser, quality). There's just too much incidental detail in this picture for me to believe it's the work of a graphics artist, and certainly far too much for me to expect it to behave as a 3D environment on anything but the most highly-specced machines.
hi andrew, remember me? i mooched you once last year. ever thought you look a little like mr freeman in that pic? on the back of Doom III, it said it was 'disturbingly life-like'. zombies from hell attacking a space station on mars, incase you don't know the 'plot'. halflife will be a lot scarier, but there won't be no chainsaw! BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
