Well, it does work. Compare and contrast, for example, the NHS to the American healthcare system. The first is socialism, the second is capitalism: and you can see which is more successful.

The problem is that in any given society, the most powerful people are always against socialism, and will do anything to suppress it. In some cases - as when setting up the NHS - a socialist programme is so successful and so popular that it cannot be directly suppressed by a democratic government.

Aah, yes. I _do_ believe that socialist institutions can and should exist inside a generally capitalist culture.

Whereas I believe that small capitalist organisations can and should exist inside a generally socialist structure.
