Date: 2004-01-31 04:02 am (UTC)The problem is that in any given society, the most powerful people are always against socialism, and will do anything to suppress it. In some cases - as when setting up the NHS - a socialist programme is so successful and so popular that it cannot be directly suppressed by a democratic government.

I think that (v. briefly) capitalism is necessary to cause increases in wealth and give people the incentive to work and socialism is necessary to look after people and deal with monopolies (look after natural ones, prevent unnatural ones).
