I'd be surprised if this was a hoax. This is Christie's, not some fly-by-night organization. And there's nothing triggering my hoax-sense with the description or the picture.

Yeah, that's a doozy. Glass is pretty hard to cast like that, but it looks cold-worked, which is within Roman capabilities, certainly. The wear looks authentic, too. A hoax likely would have had roman numerals on it.
