Saruman not being in the theatrical cut at all is very disappointing. I'm sure they made a big deal of filming three or four different death scenes for the character (since the Scouring was cut early on) and now it seems pointless.

I actually thought it was a bit too easy how they all destroyed the proto-industrial stuff and everything went back to normal (or better, due to Galadriel's magic dust). OK so Frodo can't hack it after his ordeals and swans off with the elves.

OK, OK it's all meant to be a myth, like the great Anglo Saxon/Norse sagas, but Prof T was wearing ihis heart WAY too much on his sleeve with the Scouring, and it doesn't quite fit with the rest somehow. It's the most 'contemporary' part of the story (for the time it was written) and thus the most implausible. 'Dated' isn't the word. You can accept the heroic antics of the rest of the story as it is so removed form 'real life' but the Scouring just feels wrong, like it doesn't belong.
