In the UK pants are your underwear. and referring to something as 'pants' usually means that youre equating them to a pair of large, decrepit, smelly y-fronts.

It's not a good thing.

It's always amused me that pantaloons was shortened to pants, which gave rise to the term "under-pants" for male underware which we then shortened again to "pants".

Definately one place where the Americans got it right and we took a step too far ;)

And 'trousers' was a purely Naval term up until quite recently (as only sailors wore the things, I think everybody else was still in tight breeches).
