For a work event for my US-based employer, the dress code is "business casual", with expressly specified that jeans of a single colour, with no rips or distressing, is fine for that.

Yes it was. But I find it hard to parse. I almost always, whether at work or not, wear a button-up shirt with collar and dress trousers, but nobody would call me dress casual. I still look like a schlub.

If I want to dress up - e.g. when I was on the public service desk at work, or most recently attending my brother's wedding - I wear what's called (in the US at least) a sports coat, with a tie. I've never had a suit, which I define as a formal outfit with matching jacket and trousers.
