Sister city from a couple of years ago? Impressive search, and if I remember rightly, they found three cities using existing data. Best quip on BS, somebody was going to check their sofa cushions for lost Mayan cities...

Ah. They surveyed (by internet) an area the size of Edinburgh. Not they found a city the size of Edinburgh.

How does an archaeologist "accidentally" process data with methods used by archaeologists ?
Or did he accidentally find the data base ? It was on page 16 of google; you don't get there without some intent !

You can easily get to page 3 or 4 of Google with perfectly average intent to find a reasonable answer these days.
And getting to p.16 of a Google search is perfectly normal this-is-kinda-related-to-my-phd-but-not-really PhD procrastination.

As I thought the article pointed out, they tweaked (to use archeological technical terms) the LIDAR data to display what was under the growth -- the original data was collected for other reasons (mapping?). I believe the Edinburgh reference is technically called clickbait to appeal to a UK audience as a representative large regional city but not mammoth like London. You have to pick a well known city, and Edinburgh beats most in large regional cities that many people have a general understanding of, even it's a couple of square miles off.
