The reasons for them not competing on price aren't clear to me. Possible perverse incentives from medicine purchasers?

Moral fibre on the part of the researchers involved, as best as I can figure. Here's an article from a few years ago talking about the meteoric rise of insulin prices in the USA.

(I've been a type 1 diabetic for nearly 35 years. It's not as bad in Canada, where I am, but it'd still be a pretty penny to pay without my drug benefits covering most of it.)
