I highly suspect the mind wanders less when DOING something. And especially doing something as a pair or small team. I mean possibly mostly down to "not at all". One solution might be more work of that sort and a lot less of passive listening. Of course that could well take a much lower pupil-to-teacher ratio as well as a substantially different approach to teaching / learning. Supportive rather than lecturing with high and immediate responsiveness to questions. But I know b*gger all about teaching kids. Only ever taught adults (navigation and sailing theory).

Democrats have also moved right, not left.

I don't agree. Yes, the Dems got rather more business-friendly in the middle of the stated period (which looks to be about 1972 to now), but have gotten significantly more serious about gay rights (much less trans rights) and somewhat better about racism, and have been tacking a bit back towards the left economically in the past few years.

So I would agree with the claim that the Dems have moved slightly to the left overall, when you take all the issues into account -- not as much as many people would like (and it depends on how you weight the issues, which is very subjective), but still a bit.

And it's certainly that the Repubs have moved horrifyingly to the right, especially in recent years.
