6.Separate beds had other benefits as well. The late 19th-century saw the advent of the “new woman.” She no longer wanted to be subservient to her husband and she actively claimed a new level of autonomy within her marriage. This shift was displayed in the middle-class bedroom where sexual boundaries were redrawn once again. In the grand old debauched marriage bed, wives were always available to their husbands. Separate beds marked an equipoise between the couple. “Twin beds are visually equal to each other; they take up the same amount of space,” says Hilary Hinds who authored an article titled “Together and Apart: Twin Beds, Domestic Hygiene and Modern Marriage, 1890-1945.” “There’s a kind of pause between one bed and the other. There would have to be some kind of conscious negotiation, or at least some conscious decision to move from one to the other.”
probably not the PC or popular thing to say, but I'd be ok if this custom was revived. I remember my parents having a double twin bed and always wondered about it when I was younger, but makes sense in this light.

on the flip side, my littles always somehow seem to find a way to make it into my bed at night and it's hard on both of us dissuading them at 3AM.

I've been the one in charge of Sophia at night since she moved through, so I intercept her when she comes through and take her back and resettle her. And that seems to have worked pretty well so far, as she doesn't come through in the night hardly at all (although she does shout if she has a bad dream and I go through and give her a hug and read her back to sleep, which happens about once a week).

And I agree about 7. But I wouldn't want to boast :-)

A reasonable compromise I've come across is the king bedframe with two separate mattresses and duvets on it.

That is the standard way here in Germany. Twin mattresses, 2 duvets. It's extremely unusual to find a full width mattress (I had to order one made) and no-one shares duvets! My BF says it would be unfair as I've had a lifetime to perfect my duvet-stealing technique and he hasn't. :-)

My sister and I would NEVER have even thought of leaving our own beds at night (except to go to the loo). I have to suppose we just screamed for attention instead! (Though to this very day at 75, if I stay over, my mother will STILL wake up if I do, even in a seperate room!)
