1. People before Goebbels knew this. People after Goebbels know it now, more so now than ever. And yet, the conditioning technique keeps working despite our understanding the principles better in larger numbers than before. And so the new fascist international still stands a chance of upending human civilisation in its multiple current forms.

4. Linking back to item # 1 here, right? "In other words, for a “post-racial” America to exist, white people would need to see people of color ascending to higher political offices and an increasingly multiracial nation as a win for all of America. Instead, many take these things as a personal attack and view it as a loss of their own status at the top of America’s racial hierarchy."

5. *nervous twitching*

6. *more nervous twitching* FB is biased towards watching European-origin languages, so that might partly amplify this aspect of the problem. And then, we have the Cambridge Analytica scandal presenting a blueprint for genocide-advocacy...

7. More criminalisation of refugees. I suspect the new fascist international's various factions are pleased.

I sometimes think it's a shame that in all the fuss about "We Don't Talk About Bruno" people miss how amazing a song "Surface Pressure" is

Yeah, I actually think Surface Pressure is a much better song...

I think it stands alone better - 9yo insisted on listening to the soundtrack repeatedly before we ever saw the film and although it is moving the story on, it is also much more self-contained than Bruno

Surface Pressure is the one 9yo liked first and I think still likes best. I find it amazing in a painfully-seen kind of way.

(I'm the oldest and "give it to your sister, your sister's older, give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder" sliced right between my ribs)

It's absolutely my favourite of the film, and it also has the magical power of riveting both my kids to their seats in rapt attention, which is not at all to be sniffed at.

I love musicals and I like movies if they are very very gentle. A good rule of thumb is if weezie would like them then I’ll like them.

I was watching the film with my parents at Christmas and Surface Pressure hit and I was sitting there, trying very, very hard not to show *any* expression at all when every single line was like a punch in the ribs. And then along came Isa's song as well and wow, double whammy of Oldest Daughter plus the one expected to be perfect and do everything right 😱

"Surface Pressure" is a great song, I agree; but the number of people testifying that it captures exactly how they feel is for me only a forceful reminder that neither Encanto nor anything else, either artistic or non-fic analytical, that I've ever seen captures the kind of anxiety that totally suffused my childhood and still sometimes attacks today.

It only makes me feel as if I am a totally unique person unlike anybody else in the universe, and indeed that feeling of lonely uniqueness is a large part of that anxiety of which I speak.

Being held to task for violating rules that I don't understand and that the accusers won't explain to me.
