"Limit setting for employees" is at least as much about limit setting for employers. If the first step to find a reasonable employer, how do you do that?

I grant that once you've got a reasonable employer, you still need to make use of the slack they offer.

You've got a point that there are resources for vetting employers to some extent. I don't know why so many people have awful jobs. Do they not know about the ways to check? Are they desperate enough to take the first offer they get? Are there problems like a bad division in an otherwise decent company?

There are also people who feel or are so drained from their current bad job that they don't have the energy for job hunting.

My only evidence is 'agony aunt' columns, but I often see letters from people who used to have a good boss but their new boss is terrible.

Yeah -- this is downright common in larger corporations. My wife has been through this sort of roller-coaster ride, going from great boss to awful boss to great boss; in practice, her quality of life is greatly impacted by it.

You can also get substantial variation by division or even by line manager.

Luck? Eventually getting to know trustworthy people in the same business who will tell you the truth is what worked for me. I'm one month in at a job I think will be the first good employer I've ever worked at - and I started working full time in 1980. Every time I changed jobs it was hoping the next one would be better; I hope I've found one 6 jobs later (I stayed at one for almost 30 years even though it was bad because it was union and had excellent health insurance at no cost to me and I was having kids and needed that).

You knew I was going to write a thousand-word commentary on the last item, right?
