You've got a point that there are resources for vetting employers to some extent. I don't know why so many people have awful jobs. Do they not know about the ways to check? Are they desperate enough to take the first offer they get? Are there problems like a bad division in an otherwise decent company?

I left each one after a while, and was much happier for it. And then I would bump into one of those ex-colleagues a year or two later, and it would turn out that they were still working there, still complaining, still miserable, and still doing nothing about it.
A lot of people, I think, assume that everywhere is as bad as their current employer, and that switching employer won't gain them anything.

My only evidence is 'agony aunt' columns, but I often see letters from people who used to have a good boss but their new boss is terrible.

I've also had the other way, where I hung on because I knew I'd get a decent manager eventually.

Yeah -- this is downright common in larger corporations. My wife has been through this sort of roller-coaster ride, going from great boss to awful boss to great boss; in practice, her quality of life is greatly impacted by it.
