Goodness, that comic is a lot of drama for a basic, conventionalised social interaction. The proper response to a normal compliment is "Thank you." If that seems a little too bald, you can add "It's is very kind of you to say so." After which the conversation moves on. If you are graduating from university, winning Olympic medals or have just received a Nobel Prize), "Thank you, I'm very happy," is also appropriate.
