That really sounds pretty good. I guess lots of things have been around for more than 10 years before anyone got serious about regulating them, so we're not very slow off the mark here. (And I am going to spend the next thirty years saying "Oh this EU thing sounds pretty good. I wonder if the UK should join?")

At some point I should try to get thoughts lined up in a row so that could happen :) Your links are a good inspiration :)

The only problem is now she wants to open every fucking can in the house!

my favourite tweet so far about this was:

AITA for emptying a can of baked beans over my dad’s jigsaw puzzle?

Extra points if the puzzle was this one, of course.

You are right, that's an absolutely terrible way to teach a child. It's another manifestation of the "teach her to swim by throwing her into the water, then she'll have to figure it out."

You're also right that there are tutorial videos on YouTube to explain how to do it; there's even at least one for weird vintage can openers. But most of the videos are either comparative reviews of different brands, or can opener sound effects.

(The proper way to teach a task like can opening is: 1. demonstrate it; 2. explain it; 3. guide their hands; 4. let them do it by themselves.)

I bought a new can opener a few years back and could. not. figure. out. how to get it to clamp. Could. not. I would take it out and fool with it once in a while to see if I could get that to happen. I am an Old with many years of can opener experience.

This man is a jerk.

As a teacher, I've seen many parents who don't know how to teach their children to be autonomous in many areas of life when they're around that age. After years of guidance and teaching them by example and repetition, they kind of go cold turkey and think children should be 'old' enough to do things on their own or figure things out on their own. Just like that. It never works.

During my night it looks like Bean Dad really struck a chord. FWIW I think making your child, who is already hungry, work out how to use a can opener before she gets to eat, is a dick move. That she didn't get to eat beans for another 6 hours? That's abuse.

And... looks like the account has been deleted after some old anti-Semitic & misogynistic tweets were exposed.
