May I just say "argh" about the drainage pipes?

I know, right! Looks like it will only be the case if there's an air leak though.

Yes. The article talked about "if the water in the trap dried up because of lack of use" which sounds plausible if an apartment is empty - but then who would be in the apartment to get infected? I suspect it is the space in the walls through which all the pipes travel. If there isn't an airtight seal around the outflow pipes, then air can travel up and down and seep out through cracks in the putty/silicon/flange/whatever.

That's still ARGH, by the way.
