That post describes the dynamic with great clarity. This is why a lot of US-based "progressive" positions play so poorly when they touch other cultures, (including other US cultures). No-one responds well to being told implicitly or explicitly, "if you don't agree with me, you are evil and hate me (and should feel guilty and abase yourself before me)". Whereas at least some people may be willing to listen to a rational argument, even if it is based upon premises with which they disagree.

I recall seeing "Defund the police" come up at the time, in another country's local context, where the socio-cultural dynamic was quite different, and it was (a) got both laughed at and strongly criticised even within that part of the political spectrum.

The criticism was along the lines of (a) what country do you think you're in? and (b) why are you copying the Americans blindly?

And since the internet does not forget, anything else that they support will forever be vulnerable to the response, "oh yeah X, that was the one who wanted to abolish the police, right? ha ha ha."
