Here's a question I see not being asked: How effective is punishment as a means of getting changes you want?

It depends on the punishment, which needs to be deterrent, and on how certain it is. Fear is an effective way to get quick changes in behaviour. Less so for changes to "hearts and minds", unless (a) it can be kept up for long enough for the next generation to grow up used to the fear-mediated behaviour; and (b) there is a positive incentive as well as just fear.

Purely social sanctions only work if your subject is vulnerable to them.

Less than impressed with forvo.com after finding it didn't have the first two names I thought of looking up, Michael Portillo and Fritz Leiber. YouTube was also difficult and time-consuming to use for the purpose.
