What's curious about those Soviet bus stops is that they all appear to be out in the middle of nowhere, so why would anyone want to stop there?

An excellent question! Possibly on the edge of villages? But yes, it does seem odd.

Perhaps they are centralised stops, serving multiple village territories, so placed to be equidistant to several. Just speculating, I have no idea either.
