2. My paranoia suggests to me that lowered lifespans is one of several intended consequences of Austerity Doctrine wherever it's brought in across the planet.

4. That example is enlightening in several respects. Not planning on ever joining that
"movement", but it does explain a few more things that I didn't know.

8. One more bit of progress for Warren. I expect we'll hear more of this in his Orbital Operations e-newsletter.

9. Appalling. This cannot be allowed to stand.

10. Depressing.

11. Good news!

I get the impression that there are lots of Iron Age kingdoms reported in that part of the world that haven't been located yet. I wonder if this will turn out to be a wholly new kingdom or one of the ones that has been refered to but not located.

Either is cool.

"Getting 6 hours sleep for 2 weeks is as bad as no sleep for 2 days - but you don't feel as tired."

Speaking from experience, it's very easy to get used to being tired to the point that it seems normal. I think a lot of people forget --or even don't know!-- that when they wake up they're supposed to feel awake and not sleepy, rested and not wishing they could sleep some more, alert, good and full of energy (as much as they can have of course) no matter how long they slept (some people really are fine with six hours some needs longer, which the article should have mentioned; quality is a better criteria than quantity even if the two can be correlated). Another common misconception is that, while taking naps or sleeping longer on weekends help you feel better it won't decrease your sleep debt. Missed sleep is forever lost.
