Unique

This one's arrived from 3 different directions today:

"The question is this: What unique identifiers do I have in your mind? That is, what things do you associate with me that you don't associate with anyone else.
See if you can think of three, as trivial as you like."

The problem is that very few things in people strike me as completely unique about them. I've generally struggled to even come up with one thing. Maybe my brain just isn't working well enough today.

Unique as in no one else in the entire world has it? Er...well, I can't really think of any of those.

But as for identifiers that are pretty unique among my friends:

You're tagged with lots of dark, curly hair. The person who posts the largest quantity of interesting links. And you also rank up there with someone who's pretty good to talk to.

Yeah, the hair was my first thought, too. Logic. And probably links.

It sometimes surprizes you

What some people consider an "identifier" can vary. I once tried to ask a gardener if my friend Sean was working at the site that day. It was a large piece of property and I could only talk through a fence. "Sean. I can't remember his last name, but it was short." "Well, there's a few guys named Sean." "Okay, he's a bit taller than me, my age, er, medium dark hair, uh, doesn't wear glasses,... uh,... kind of quiet." [blank stare] "They all look about like that." "Uh, well,.... " I struggled to think of something that would separate Sean from the other quiet young men on the work site. "Oh! He has dreads to his waist with beads and coloured threads in them." "Oh,... him,... he's gone to Oregon with his dad for the weekend."

It took me *how long* to remember the waist length dreads? To some that would be a strong identifier. I just didn't notice any more.

As for your identifiers from me:
- Logical, intelligent posts with thought - not that no one else does them, just not on my friends list and not so well.
- Very dry wit and humour. Very much like my father. That is good and bad.
- A very open mind to discussion and exchange of ideas. You keep the discussion on topic and focused even while exploring the new ideas and trains of thought.

And lots more. Nothing is truly truly absolutely unique. But there are things that seem clearer than others.

big fluffy hair and big fluffy beard... except that the beard isn't always there.

lives in scotland.

the face reminds me (or used to make me think) of weird al yankovic.

on that last note, i'm not very good at remembering/recognizing people's names and faces, unless i've had lots of interaction with them. i've noticed that whenever someone reminds me of someone else, it helps my memory a lot to write that down in my little cheat-sheet of names and identifying attributes. but sometimes when i'm introduced to people, i totally forget to look for distinguishing features. i may look straight at them and even have a conversation with them, but afterwards realize that i don't remember what they looked like. then i have nothing definite to write down in my cheat-sheet.

For you?

The Hair - maybe not actualyl unique but pretty damned unusual.

Your weird twisty shins that mean that your feet don't line up with your knees.

You constantly revise your opinions in the light of new data and actively (and eagerly) seek such data. [I do that too, but very few people do. (most folks seem unreasonably emotionally attached to their opinions, even when there is conflicting evidence)]
