I think a lot of chosen one stories do introduce something the character "deserves" success with.

I think there's a practical reason for this. If you don't have some chosen one thing, you have to explain why this empathisable person is the one saving the world, why are they the best person for this? But most stories do have you feel the success by making it depend on something you achieved yourself. Like, you're prophecied to succeed, but you succeed because you trust your friends. Or you have some special magic but you use it in ways no-one expected.

Like in Harry Potter. Harry is singled out. But what he does about it matters.
