The CIA is awful, terrible, no-good, very bad. This is not as bad as their all-time worst operation for ongoing collateral damage (that would be launching a fake vaccination campaign to track down Osama bin Laden), but it's not very good. Lots of people are already worried that the CIA are spying on them through their television. It's a classic delusion, to the point of being something of a stereotype. It is really not a helpful contribution to mental health across the globe for them to actually do it.

Therefore, it also was a Bad Idea to let TV tech get to the point that would allow spy agencies to actually do their jobs to us via our TV sets. If only retroactively so.

Although this is hideous, a least there is a fairly simple hack - turn it off at the wall. I have all my gear on an x-gang with switch (German sockets, like US ones, lack a switch) and was trained by my mother, for safety and economy reasons, to switch things totally off (indeed, she unplugs them from the wall too!)
