It's an interesting thought about something that back in the day when I was having to deal with several government departments over stuff leading up to the GRA in 2004, the home office was by the length of several streets the worst- they were personally insulting and misgendered, mistitled and deadnamed egregiously as a matter of course.

Other transpeople had similar experiences with them including one woman with an MBE!

I found that MPDG article really interesting because I had always assumed MPDG was a critique of shallow, sexist writing. But I guess there is nothing the internet can't turn into a way to sneer at young women.

I too, from the first time I heard the phrase, understood MPDG to be a critique of bad writing. The MPDG lacks an inner life not because a person can lack an inner life, but because in the story we never see inside her. Like the Magic Negro and other such writing stereotypes, she exists in the story solely to serve a plot that's built entirely around the (white, male) protagonist.

Tentatively: The problem-- if there is one-- isn't that the MPDG doesn't have an inner life, it's that she doesn't have an outer life. That is, she just bounces into the story, supplying enthusiasm, emotional openness, and weirdness, but what are her resources and problems?

If you asked the character why she existed what sort of answer would you get?

My question isn't why she exists, it's how. What does she do for money?

Yeah, that's a question that really grounds the character in reality.

A question I've often seen asked is: Why does virtually every character in movies or tv who lives in Manhattan have an apartment they couldn't possibly afford?
