To be honest, I'd likely cut back from my 200-230K words/year to maybe 100-120K words/year, but I would definitely still be a freelance RPG writer, in addition to adding in world traveler, and various of the more expensive occult disciplines.

So, you've established that most people (so far, but I doubt that will change much) work for the money, but a few have managed to sort themselves into a job doing something they really enjoy.

I'm sure that you'll excuse me being underwhelmed.

I like my job :) But if I was independently wealthy I'd do something non-profit making.. like playing roleplay games :P

'S not quite true for me: if I suddenly came into money, I'd probably continue to work for the same organisation, but I'd quit my job so that a) they could pay someone else, and more would get done, and b) I wasn't subject to the shite management. So, I work for love and money, and it's only the part attached to the money that I hate.

What do you do (out of interest)?

Community involvement work for a queer rights group. I love being an activist, I hate being a worker doing activist things.

Almost my attitude exactly -- I'd *buy* my employer, and make the shite management work for *me* ;)

Sample size is too small for real argumentative weight. Why not find a larger study that's already been done (i'm sure there are several)?

I enjoy my job.

I can't think of any job I'd do if I was independentely wealthy.

The two don't necessarily correlate in that way.

Note that I said "really enjoy". I occasionally enjoy my job. I enjoy it more than fish factories or telesales or other crap jobs that I have done. It's still not what I would do if I didn't have to do something to bring in the cash - it's just the easiest option (for me, given my skills and experience) that pays the most.

I have plans, but the plans need money to get underway(don't they always?).

I repeat: "I can't think of any job I'd do if I was independentely wealthy."

I *do* really enjoy my job. My ideal job, which is way different from mine, would be a film reviewer for a magazine. I can't think of anything I'd rather do more to make money.

If I was independently wealthy, I still wouldn't do that (given the choice). I'd rather spend the time watching more films.

If I felt I had time to give, I'd do voluntary work - but I don't consider that a 'job', I consider that giving of yourself.

Ah, I get it. same as me (and I suspect, most people). One has to do something to avoid being bored, but if one is independently wealthy it needn't be (shouldn't be) an actual job.

I could slob for the rest of my life if about half of what now earn magically appeared each month.

Oh, me too! ;+)

There are so many places to see, books to read, films to watch, albums to listen to, games to play etc etc, I'd *never* get bored.

I've decided people who say "If I won the lottery, I'd have to work part time, even just on a voluntary basis, or I'd be bored" simply lack imagination, and don't deserve to win the lottery.

Whereas I do.

Obviously.

The funny thing is that if you asked me this a week ago, I would've had a different answer for #2.
I still enjoy what I'm doing but my upper management are malicious and/or incompetent and i'm no longer shielded from them.

I would certainly continue with my job until the end of Dimitri, then either (a) set up my own games studio or (b) do a PhD then set up my own games studio.

Ooh, the choices are endless.

It's all just a cover because you just don't want to share :-P

OR....nah, you like your family so you can't be planning to bump them off and collect the cash....so what is the plan :-)

I'm running an online game company right now, and there are many aspects of it that I like quite a bit, most prominently designing, developing, and engineering games.

However, if I was independently wealthy I *would* hire folks to do the drudge parts of the job that I don't like, and also would drop my amount of energy expenditure down to "what I felt like", on my own time scale. It'd probably be somewhere between 20 and 60 hours a week.
