With the addition that what you need to keep the whole system in check are decent sets of rules, oversight, and huge amounts of transparency. I don't trust large businesses or the government. I want to see what they're up to, and keep them responsible.

The Barnet / Corby story sounds like parts of the country are sinking into being the 3rd world.

Absolutely: all Western democracies should stand by Canada here, especially as most of them have had the habit of making similar remarks about human rights violations in the past.

I have not seen anyone, at least outside of Canada, point out that their foreign minister is the daughter of a Ukrainian refugee, and strongly identifies with that part of her heritage. So it's not surprising that she feels particularly strongly about human rights issues.
