I can't decide whether this means that the current government and much of the political class in general are spectacularly ignorant, arrogant, and blinkered.

Or that it means that politicians are always like this, and when we were younger we simply didn't notice because they appeared to us to have authority and gravitas, and that as we are getting older, the impressions politicians seek to project don't work on us any more.
