I'm okay with a tourist tax. It's not as if Edinburgh is short of tourists and a modest tax that is used to make the impact of tourism on the citizens of Edinburgh more pleasant seems fair and reasonable.

Most tourist taxes I've ever seen implemented are used to fund promotion efforts to encourage more tourists. Myself I'd prefer to spend the money on signs outside the airport's arrivals hall, on the bridges and on the M8 saying "Edinburgh is full. Go away." August would be a good time for them to appear.

I absolutely would love to see something similar in NYC.

If I read it correctly then the proposal is that the money is spent on alleviating the impact of tourism on the residents but what exatly that is I'm not sure.

It could mean anything from secret, locals only bars and subsidised theatre tickets to strict enforcement of noise complaints, extra police and A&E funding and the provision of extra social housing.

It feels as though there ought to be more recent data on acceptance of same-sex relationships. The article starts by mentioning the legal recognition of same-sex marriage in 2013 as a milestone—which I agree it is—and then the comparisons are all 1990 vs. 2010, nothing that would show how same-sex marriage affected that. There's also the vague "may have reached peak acceptance," which doesn't sound as promising as it may have been meant: does the author think that what their numbers show from 2010 is as good as it will ever get?
