Date: 2018-01-12 02:55 pm (UTC)I seem to remember some *other* time PZ Myers laid into Pinker for something out of context, I guess there's some history there?
I feel really awful about this sort of thing. My instinct is that "actively promoting racist views" is really bad, and "saying something that can possibly be taken out of context" isn't. But the more people pressure me to treat them as equivalent, the more I question myself.
I've heard so many rants about "apologising by explaining that you didn't mean it like that isn't ok" and strategically, even if it's true you may not want to say that. But I also feel like somewhere there must be a cut-off where you really *are* not saying it.

Date: 2018-01-13 04:37 pm (UTC)Ocado Helper Robots and the Disappearing Apprenticeships.
Date: 2018-01-13 11:40 pm (UTC)Yes, I know the story talks about "engineers" for maintenance, but they mean power engineering, which is a trade requiring a lengthy apprenticeship:
http://www.absa.ca/certifications/power-engineers/fourth-class/
https://www.bcit.ca/study/programs/2430dipma
If the helper role in a workplace is taken by a robot, then there isn't any place for an apprentice to learn on the go and meet new situations under guidance.
So, without apprenticeships, there will be no new power engineering tradesmen[1]. And then Business will moan that education is offering too many useless options like art and music, when Business needs trained trades persons, and Education will jump and reconfigure school so that every child, right down to kindergarten, will be taking trades-friendly subjects without any of that artsy-fartsy fluff - BUT WITHOUT APPRENTICESHIPS IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH ART[3] IS CUT.[2]
[1] - don't toy with me - women are welcome into classroom training, but are rarely(less confrontational version of: never) taken on as apprentices.
[2] - ahem - this lack of apprenticeships has been a hot button for me all of my academic advisor career. The Moaning of business and the Gutting of education and the Absence of apprenticeships has not changed. Robots just means a new way of avoiding offering apprenticeships.
[3] - this includes design, and game theory, and animation, and film, and, y'know, all those skill sets that lead to game generation and app generation and robotics and ... [4]
[4] - so why aren't those industries so whiny to education about lack of people with skills in those areas? Answer in another rant another day.
