Why is this news? The EU laid out its position two years ago, and this was a major part of it. More to the point, what made the Brits think they could change it by saying "pretty please?" This is pathetic.

Yup. It's an appalling and baffling* situation.

Scottish politics feels a bit mushy at the moment.

The genuine enquiry of 2014 seems to have given way to some sloganeering and lots and lots of people waiting to see what happens next. Which given the uncertainty of the EU situation and understandably voter fatigue isn't surprising.

It's a bit like sitting in a lukewarm bath. At some point you're either going to have to get our or put some more hot water in but for the moment it uninspiringly tepid.

OFFS indeed on the marriage visa thing, because even if one assumed Brexit had already happened (and it hasn't) the Ireland Act 1949 would still apply.

In particular, Section 2(1) "Republic of Ireland not a foreign country.":

It is hereby declared that, notwithstanding that the Republic of Ireland is not part of His Majesty’s dominions, the Republic of Ireland is not a foreign country for the purposes of any law in force in any part of the United Kingdom or in any colony, protectorate or United Kingdom trust territory, whether by virtue of a rule of law or of an Act of Parliament or any other enactment or instrument whatsoever, whether passed or made before or after the passing of this Act, and references in any Act of Parliament, other enactment or instrument whatsoever, whether passed or made before or after the passing of this Act, to foreigners, aliens, foreign countries, and foreign or foreign-built ships or aircraft shall be construed accordingly.
