It's one of the items on my list of reasons against moving to France one day.

It's also bloody stupid. Check people aren't wearing trunks when they walk in the building. Check they're not dirty.

I also only just discovered French dog names having a starting letter based on the year...

I've known that for years. Did I never mention that to you?

Though do you know who enforces that, and what happens if you don't do it? All I know is the bit about the letter, which I was told as a kid when my cousins got a dog, so I didn't get a proper explanation.

I don't think you mentioned it before.

So far as I can tell from the three minutes of googling I did earlier it's when you register the dog. But it might just be if you register it with the Kennel Club. Dogs need to have a chip, but that's about all.

Hopefully someone with more knowledge will chime in!

I have More Knowledge courtesy of a twitter thread I read which said it's not actually a *must* it's just that people look at you funny if you don't, and it's only for purebred dogs anyway.

(French person here). If you have a pass, nobody's checking on anything. You can pretty much come and go as you want. You overestimate the number of people we have to help you out or just do anything really in public places. :/ Also boxer shorts are allowed too. But still no swimming trunks. It's really stupid indeed. Who's making sure you've washed your swimming gear anyway?

I see their argument, if that's "normal". We don't want people trying to ban toad-in-the-hole because it doesn't have toads.

But I also feel like, "it's ok that we're lying, everyone knows we're lying" is a crappy argument. Wouldn't it be better if we DID enforce some sort of truth in names and in advertising so people COULD believe it? Even if they were young, or old, or didn't speak english well?

I mean, I am a middle aged, native English speaker with a degree and I thought it meant it was all cheese. I thought that it didn't need refrigeration because it was a long-aged dry cheese.

Good point. I hadn't really thought about what I would think without the prompting of the article. I thought the point of hard cheese was that it did keep. But all the parmesan I see is refrigerated. So I don't know what I would have thought.

In fact, what I thought when I saw the photo of the shelf was, "Kraft? Don't they make one of those horrible cheese substitutes? I bet their 'parmesan' is horrible". But I think that reaction was more outdated prejudice than an accurate judgement, even if it happened to be accurate in this case.
