I'm puzzled by why adults with children seem to have higher incomes than adults without, unless they are counting benefits.

I can think of two factors that might explain this. (1) If you're particularly poor, you can't afford to have children; and probably more important (2) Adults with children are in their prime earning years compared to adults without. Assuming "with children" means "with dependent children", that probably means adults aged 30-60 (or 2-5 years older for adults with two children). If you're young and you're still earning relatively little, or you've retired and you're living off your pension, you won't be in that category.
