He was a child star (and was very good in the movie "Holes", which is well worth seeing) and then had either a breakdown, or made a deliberate move to separate his public image from his clean-cut past.
I found myself suffering from genre whiplash. Are we in an Epic Action Adventure or a Wacky Family Comedy? How does this director make explosions and big chase/fight scenes so dull?
The movies at least made enough money and opened the market for the animated Transformers: Prime, which I rather like. It has its own spinoff for 3-8 year olds, Transformers: Rescue Bots which both my children enjoy. It has a lot more idiot-ball-as-plot compared to Prime, and a designated Stupid Person In Authority, neither of which endear it to me. Both series have a gender balance issue, but they do actually have multiple female characters in them.
Oh yes, that too. Give me silly fun or serious grit. Don't give me both in the space of ten seconds. Or, at least, if you're going to do so, do it as well as Pixar or Disney can.
And yeah - I should not be bored by that many explosions.
I tracked down a few segments of Prime on YouTube. Looks pretty entertaining.
That is some amazing singing, playing, dancing, ribbon trapeze ... in the service of a very silly song. I love how they are all going for it full-on anyway.
The only interesting thing I know about Shia Labeouf is that Harrison Ford called him "a fucking idiot" for trash-talking the Indiana Jones movie LaBeouf was allowed to make with him. Ford isn't mealy-mouthed these days, but I think someone has to be pretty bad for him to go off on them like that.

He was also very good in the music video for Elastic Heart:

Give me the animated Transformers any day of the week!
(Not that I've watched any of that in years. But hold a gun to my head and I'd rather have the version with Weird Al singing in it...)
