I was thinking that I get a *lot* of happiness from the vicarious experience of reading. Quite cheaply too.

Yup. Vicarious experiences clearly work very well. I'd love someone to do a decent study on the effects of different media, and which ones are the most effective at delivering vicarious experiences.
