andrewduckerI just discovered that in a 40x CD player, the outer rim of the disk is moving at 677km/hour or 55% of the speed of sound.
Digging a little deeper, I discover that a single speed CD-ROM can manage up to 500 RPM. Of course, that's CLV, whereas modern CD drives are CAV. Still, I wonder what speed 40x CD drives actually spin at.
Anyway round, that's really, really fast.
