The Toynbee article is pretty much exactly why I don't want Downton Abbey. My grandmother was a servant and her stories pretty much match what Toynbee describes, and don't at all match the glossy image in the show. I can't find that kind of thing endearing, I really can't.

Yeah. Part of me thinks that most people know it's fantasy. And part of me thinks that actually it will still have an effect on how people think of that time, and that most people take in the depictions uncritically.
