Forbidden, or invisible to the statistics? An Irish friend of mine told me that if I had, hypothetically, been applying for a job in Ireland, I would be asked, not whether I am Catholic or Protestant (to which the answer is "no") but whether I would be perceived as Catholic or Protestant by other people. I said I didn't know, and he and his partner agreed immediately that my facial features meant that in Ireland, strangers would think I was Protestant.
