I've never quite understood the sex/marriage+livestock connection. I assume it's one of those obscure holdover social norm-enforcing conventions, like cannibalism jokes around vegetarians.

It's particularly strange here in the US, since most people have never stood within fifty feet of an animal that qualifies as livestock. Pets, yes, but no one mentions wanting to marry your cat. Then again, no one says that the next step after poly marriage is marrying your car, either, and most US-ians spend an awful lot of time with their car.

I think that it's because people make jokes about sheep-fanciers (and horse/cow-fanciers), and so it's seen as something that (very odd) people might want to do.

And yes, I've definitely seen the argument that once we open marriage up people might want to do _anything_ and it's all downhill to the point where cats and dogs are marrying each other.
