Oxytocin

A little confession, I've been experimenting with pheromone blends for awhile, none of which contain that molecule, because the company I currently get them from is ran by people who are not evil. Why?

That little molecule is involved in the birthing process causing uterine contractions. Sans as an abortificant, this is not something you want casually sold to just anyone in the hopes it will improve everything about the world, and now it's being overhyped as a miracle molecule, which I think is silly, considering the types of synthesized phero blends I've playing around with lately.

While this hormone isn't without its uses, it is only one of many that is involved in basic human relations, and one the hype over this one is over I'm sure this-or an actual pheromone blend-will be replaced in the headlines as well. I'd get in it more, but I don't have the links on hand with me right now.

I was in agreement up until:

That said, if you heckle a comedian he or she will say really shitty things to you in return. If you heckle him during a boring rape joke, he's going to come back with rape jokes directed at you.

Uh, no. That does not talking about how funny if a woman in the audience got gang raped okay, not remotely, that's a threat, not a joke. Regardless of what a heckler said, what he did was sociopathic.

The best way to stop rape jokes is to ignore them.

Like bullying, cyberstalking, harassment, what planet does he live on? Everything after point 2 is about lecturing people to shut up about hate speech. At least some links in the comments section was useful:

If CSI turns out to be right about image enhancement, I'm going to feel really stupid :)

Much as I love Defense Grid, I'm loathe to cough up for the Kickstarter for DG2. Don't get me wrong, I like Kickstarters for games and I've already backed a a couple but DG2's just annoys me.

If it only reaches the first tier then everyone has to pay up and all you get is an 8-level expansion? No thanks! If it fully funds all its stretch goals then great, DG2 will likely be awesome but I'm not risking paying for what may be a small expansion at five times what I paid for the original game!

It's a nice idea but their tiers are all screwed up. If, towards the end, it looks like it'll make the final stretch goal then I'll chip in but not before. If everyone thinks like me (and judging by the comments on the RPS article, quite a few do) then it'll never get funded and Hidden Path will have no-one to blame but themselves.

X is not funny, but jokes about it may be.

Where X may be rape, paedophilia, the Holocaust, Fred and Rose West etc.

Exactly. Just because it's sick, doesn't mean it's not funny.

The Jezebel article made me a bit uncomfortable.

I'm happy to read "rape jokes are never funny" as approximately equal to "rape jokes are often inappropriate, hurtful & distasteful".

I was picking up vibes of gendered assumptions about who can be a victim of rape & all men are rapists.

I'll need to re-read it when I'm a little less cross.

Classic examples are to be found each week under Marina Hyde's Lost in Showbiz column in the Guardian. Srsly, it's called Lost In Showbiz! It's been there for years and years! Get over it!

'Alpha Nerding' is such a pet hate of mine that I've started going to extreme lengths to defend things that secretly annoy even me a little (eg the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movies).

It's weird because in casual conversation I'm a total snob about some stuff and I'm sure some folk think I will dis them for certain likes and dislikes, and perhaps that's slightly true, but I will always find people who are fashionably cynical or ignorant about something more annoying than the people who like that thing. If you enjoy America's Next Top Model, that's nice for you. If you put real energy into slamming it... well, I think that really says much more about you than it does about the people who like it.

Ah yes, Defense Grid. I would probably have the first one, but it's Windows only and I've pretty much given up running emulators for games (except of course Dos emulators).

That is weird, and makes me jolly irritated about the Kickstarter, which includes Steam codes for the first one as a reward. At any rate, not this week, because I said 'I'm not buying Portal 2 until it turns up for $4.99 in the Steam summer sale'. Mmm mmm.
