Anyone remember when people shared things with the world, rather than just their friends?

It would appear FB has messed up my setting again, my shares are supposed to be public, not friends. But, y'know, clicking share is silly easy over there, it's the only effort I can be bothered with currently.

That's a bunch of good stuff. Thanks.

How feasible was it for most people to share things with the world? It's always a communications channel with a limited audience, and it isn't feasible for the vast majority of people to pay attention to the vast majority of stuff.

I noticed people I know but haven't friended on FB when they post comments. Admittedly, both they and I needed to be on FB, and that's a sort of constraint that LJ and usenet don't have.

I've done 4 a few times, including once or twice when nobody in the lift knows me. It is indeed fun ^.^

Oh, I dunno. Any fool can get two people to follow each other. For proper style, you have to confuse a single person into following himself.

How did I miss that the first time round? That's wonderful.

No; it's just that access used to be limited by knowing where to find the posts, rather than logging into a site. (Were they actually posting non-publicly, even? You can post to 'world' on facebook...)

It was Victoria Coren on "Have I Got News For You" and for some reason just resonated with the QI link.

Nor had we. It was one of the random "sky plus recording has finished - oh look, it's Victoria Coren being entertaining" moments.

I'm pretty sure that last one is shopped. The T. Rex - like all sauropods - has always used Heckler & Koch submachine guns exclusively, and that looks like an Uzi to me.

I was going to point out that it has to be 'shopped -- they clearly removed Jesus riding the T. Rex, probably so as not to offend more delicate religious sensibilities

People who think Jesus had that very specific level of awesomeness just above "being God" and just below "riding a T-Rex riding a Shark"... :)

My skin's not thick enough to share my opinions with the world. Maybe that's not very brave but it is much better for my blood pressure.

I remember when people thought they were sharing things with the world, but only a handful of friends actually saw.

It is funny how insular FB encourages people to be though.

No... I remember when people shared things by sending massive email forwards to their entire address book. I think I prefer facebook.

*L*O*V*E* that first photo.

#6 -- recently saw a post (somewhere) from a guy who'd made a shiny future-suit; ran into a bar, asked what year it was, shouted "Dammit!" and ran out; he was about to go back on the same date to ask again, shout "It worked!" and run out.

#9 -- One of the bits of irrelevant filler in Illuminatus! was the self-destruct mynah birds. Someone trained mynah birds to say, "Here, kitty, kitty, kitty!" and turned them loose in Washington Square Park.
