Turns out giving children good reading books makes them read when they have already been given the tools to make that possible by consistent use of a well thought out phonics scheme.

Don't get me started on Michael bloody Rosen, who, to the best of my knowledge has never taught a mixed-ability class to read.

I learned to read entirely without phonics... I understand (from primary-teaching friends) that it is a hotly debated topic as to whether it is a useful method or not.

I was forced at school to read through an utterly dreadful series of "learn to read" books; although my experience of them as simply dreadful and in no-way helpful was probably exacerbated (if not entirely caused) by the fact that I could *already read* at a much better level (insisting on assuming the entire class is at the same level FAIL). Miracle they didn't put me off reading for life; good books that are written to be entertaining are much better at teaching that books are *worth reading*, but as a teaching aid for learning the skill of *how to read* in a class room setting (I learned from 'real' books at my mother's knee; but she was only supervising the one of me) I've no idea.

Prometheus isn't that bad. I think that you can't judge a monster movie (which is what it is) based on whether the science makes sense or not.

I mean, otherwise, give up on any zombie or Frankenstein film.

I do think that it was dumb to shoehorn a meta-Christian fable into a monster movie, given that all the audience wanted was xenomorphs in 3D, but, whatever - we got to see monsters killing people and it was pretty.

I think the problem is that Prometheus doesn't give any explanations.

I got eviscerated by a teacher on this one. Apparently real books can't *teach* them to read, only keep them reading when they can.

The problem is that from Michael Rosen's POV, what you might see as "teachers doing their job" he sees as fascist Gradgrindism crushing a child's natural love of stories.

Um, I dunno what my mum did - nothing all that active - reading out the street signs etc for me when we were out and about, and general encouragement is all I can recall / (maybe telling me when I got it right? Dunno, can't rememner). But I could read at 2.5, could write at 3. I worked words out (and their meanings) by the parts that were the same as others etc. etc. (very systematising, pattern/rule spotting, abstracting brain and shit-hot memory [less so on that now!]) Can still give you a damned good guess as to which bits of which english words are Greek vs Latin despite knowing neither language from extrapolation from the ones that I DO know are one or t'other. Also I'm very verbal and have always talked-nonstop! So me, I think I'd learn to read on my own as long as there were books about and a few clues..other people are different...

I'm still surprised at references to "the" homosexual community. I'm aware of homosexual communities, of course, but have no idea how many homosexuals include themselves.
Wouldn't references to "the heterosexual community" be laughed down? Come to think of it, are the "Log Cabin Republicans" part of the "homosexual community" or are they another one?

totally
Let me make some wild, hand-waving estimates. Call the population 40% adult male. Take the figure I vaguely recall attributed to Kinsey of 3-6% homosexual. (I am not championing a particular estimate, just taking a convenient, arguably conservative number.) That's 1.2-2.4% of the total population.
Is the gay section of your city 2% of the total population? (Not even counting inmigration, which would make it 2% of a larger region.) Where's everybody else?
My point is simply that I suspect there is a substantial "everybody else". Just human diversity.

Oh, where I am physically is in Chicago.

And it'll always be an uphill losing battle for the entrenched industry clinging to outdated models.
