Many years ago there was a movie about a man who just couldn't take it any more, snapped at the banality of modern life, and went on a murderous rampage against all the things he hated about society.

Sadly, it was directed by Joel Schumacher and, well, not very good.

This one looks better:

(Not least because it looks like having a second character who goes further than the main character highlights how this is not a _sane_ response, by any means.)

Oh that does look good.

I just watched Pretty Poison (Anthony Hopkins and Tuesday Weld, 1964) yesterday, and this trailer suggests that God Bless America may have some of the same factors I liked about Pretty Poison.

It's not only right-wingers who have eliminationist fantasies...

I'm reminded of "For All the Rude People", a short story version of the concept. As I faintly recall, it was about killing people for non-political nastiness.

Okay, I never knew you didn't like Falling Down.

I guess we have a problem here.

I thought it was rather good.

I like it. It's not a clever film, but it's pretty fun.

I liked it because it didn't try to be clever. Very direct, and surprisingly sympathetic. Probably the only character Douglas has played that I didn't want to punch.

The problem is right-wingers thinking that D-FENS is the good guy. (I've seen that in comment threads once, and I expect that if I read right-wing blogs more I'd have seen others.) Even though the fucking point of the film, and the subject of his epiphany in the third reel, is that he's the bad guy.

I liked that, but then I often really like the device of an unreliable narrator. While that wasn't quite how it went down, it was a close equivalent.

I like to think there are very few people who would *not* love to be able to do this.
though in fairness the overwhelming majority of folks I encounter are completely cool.
