I consider the Nightmare Before Christmas to be a Halloween film and not a Christmas film.

If I had to pick a Tim Burton Christmas movie, I'd go with Edward Scissorhands.

I've never seen either of them. Must remedy this.

Well, we didn't have a TV til I was 6, but I don't think that's why. I haven't seen The NIghtmare Before Christmas because I've never been a big fan of Halloween (not big on scary things), so wouldn't have wanted to see it when it came out. Since then I've seen enough Tim Burton to think I'd probably like it, but just haven't got round to it.
I have no idea why I've never seen the Muppet Christmas Carol. I've certainly seen enough clips to feel like I've seen it and I think I've been around when other people have been watching it, but I'm pretty sure I've never actually sat down and watched it all the way through.

Oh, do see it. In fact if you want to have a viewing party I am happy to bring the DVD round.

As a Victorianist I just love how much they stuck to the original text. I mean, they do make plenty of changes - starting with, yanno, EVERYONE BUT SCROOGE IS A MUPPET which is not quite what Dickens wrote - but the part where they sell the bedcurtains? Not what I expect from what is ostensibly a children's movie.

I'm with [livejournal.com profile] bart_calendar on the Nightmare Before Christmas being a Halloween film.

For me the difficulty was choosing between the Muppets and John McClane. Eventually I decided that the former was a great Christmas movie, the latter a great movie that takes place at Christmas — yes Christmas is part of the plot, but it could've been worked around to something else.

SEWIWEIC: The 1973 Czech movie Tři oříšky pro Popelku (which is a movie adaptation of a literary version of Cinderella). I have grown up with this movie, not least because it is a mainstay of German Christmas TV since the late 1970s.
Of course my generation knows it by heart, and the soundtrack was in the Top 10 a few years ago. It's not Christmas without it.

None of the above. My vote goes to Ji Dong Ji Xia (The Iceman Cometh), (Hong King 1989), which is a wonderful time-travel action romance with a Christmas background.

Also missing from your poll: Jingle All the Way. Sinbad ain't been right since the zip + 4 thing.

+1.

"fa-ra-ra-ra-rah, ra-ra-ra-rah"

Or, as I found myself saying to my son today "fra-gee-lay - that's Italian".

My SEWIWEIC is "A Christmas Story," which has already received a couple votes in the comment thread.

The Long Kiss Goodnight is also a warm, family feel-good Xmas movie:

[livejournal.com profile] andrewducker has mistaken me for this dickhead Marcus Halberstram. It seems logical because Marcus also works at P&P and in fact does the same exact thing I do and he also has a penchant for Valentino suits and Oliver Peoples glasses. Marcus and I even go to the same barber, although I have a slightly better haircut.

So, no comment this time pointing out that one of those names turns out to be shared by a porn film? :-)

(Cue a lively debate over which one would make the most plausible name for a porn film, which will require brain-bleach after reading it...)
