I phoned the plumber yesterday, who told me to take a look at the overflow pipe when I got home and then email him. And, as it was dripping when the pressure was turned up, the problem is probably with a venting valve.

So I called the boiler people, spent thirty seconds confirming who I was, they confirmed the boiler was still under warranty, and set up an appointment for tomorrow morning.

Julie can cope with the electric fire for one more day, and hopefully it _will_ be the valve, in which case they won't have to take up half the flooring, and it will all be over soon.

(You have no idea how much I dread the flooring being taken up. Two lots of living in a completely disrupted flat was quite enough.)

You have reminded me that we had this and it was the venting valve. I have a feeling that the engineer did a little hack that sorted it out at the expense of theoretically slightly reducing the integrity of the overall system; at any rate, cost bobbins because he serviced the boiler as well and have had no more trouble since. Must have been six or seven years ago.
