Sexual harassment isn't exclusive to humans. I feel really bad for my brine shimp and guppies (in the past) because they seem to be pestered by males. At least with fish you can chose the numbers of males and females in your tank, but any split could have happened with the brine shrimp. I'm really glad that there is only one adult male at the moment :(
So, if it is a common behaviour in the animal kingdom, what can we do about it? It's a really bad mating strategy in UK society, because women are going to sue and be disgusted. However it seems in other countries that people can get away with it. I suppose we need equality, transparency and free speech.

Date: 2011-10-21 12:34 pm (UTC)We have proof from a fair number of societies that things can be better than they are in Russia. The question is, how do societies change, and how can this be directed in a way that I'd like (as you say, equality, transparency and free speech).

Date: 2011-10-21 06:42 pm (UTC)This is such a basic misunderstanding of the demand.
The demand isn't for overseas content to be aired online immediately after publication. It's for the content to be aired online simultaneously. Look at the live blogging/forum threads that happen while people watch "event" shows. Look at that very article's discussion of spoilers or the marketing of popular/ready-manufactured "cult" shows as being "events". If you want love Lost, but have to wait until the episode finishes in the US before you can start watching it, you're not part of that immediate discussion. You're coming in an hour later.
If I'm really hyped about a computer game, I don't want the UK version to come out a day later than the US release because that's better than it coming a week later. I want it to be simultaneous. It's not as if they have to rush film reels or discs onto trans-atlantic planes, this is 2011. A day after release, the game will be complete, cracked, gamefaqs will have a few rudimentary walkthroughs and (in some cases) memes will already be getting posted and emailed around. Yes, piracy is a problem for computer games... but staggered release dates will do nothing except make things worse.
No re-broadcast shenanigans, however, will ever beat Channel 5 showing Knight Rider but cutting out literally the middle third of each episode.
