The first time I saw "facepalm" (a year or so ago), I immediately visualized the gesture I think of as being Very French -- striking the base of the palm against the forehead, then lifting the hand in a kind of hopeless gesture. (Exclaiming "comme tete a la bete!" -- as I seem to remember the phrase being, with apropriate accent marks -- or "how touched in the head!" seems to be optional). I do think "faux pas" is narrower in meaning, but the association is still Absolutely Inspired.
