Have heard whispers of dreamwidth - but went to look and it said it was for creative artists so felt I didn't really qualify. Is it more of an LJ than a Facebook type thing? Cos I'd be much more interested in a Facebook substitute...

It's an LJ clone - well, originally. It now does a lot of things somewhat differently (like separating out "Friend" into "watch" and "trust").

There are no good FB substitutes - and if there was, then it would be lacking all of my friends on it. The problem is the social stickiness.
